Jake the Alligator Man - 2012 Limited Edition T-shirt

Ever been to a birthday party for a real alligator man? Each year a hard-working group of folks in Long Beach, Washington throws an amazing birthday party for everyone's favorite "Half Man - Half Alligator" - Jake. Jake is well-known in the world of roadside attractions, but if you've yet to make his acquaintance you can visit him daily at Marsh's Free Museum - one of our all-time favorite places to spend some time. (Our tip - look for the two-headed calf!)

The man of the hour.

This year Jake's annual Bachelor Party will be Friday, August 3rd followed by an all-ages celebration on Saturday, August 4th. There'll be a car show, live music and the always hard-fought battle to become Jake's Bride for the upcoming year! You can find more party info at Jake's birthday website here.

It's been our absolute pleasure the past few years to design the limited edition Jake t-shirt for the party and without further ado offer up this year's design. The theme for the party this year is "Under the Sea" and we decided it was time for Jake to don a little nautical attire. Ahoy Jake!

See you at the beach!

Jake the Alligator Man's 2011 Birthday Party

One of our favorite projects here at Vintage Roadside is having the honor of designing the t-shirt for Jake the Alligator Man's Birthday Party each summer.

For those of you not familiar with Jake, he's one of the star attractions at Marsh's Free Museum in Long Beach, Washington. Marsh's, open since 1935, is a true piece of roadside history and one of our must-see places. Everything from taxidermy to vintage penny arcade games as well as plenty of souvenirs to take home.

Huge thanks to Wendy and the Long Beach Merchants Association for throwing one of the best parties of the year! To encourage you to start making plans for 2012 here are 20 random photos from the celebration.

Jake the Alligator Man Party 2009

We had a fantastic time at Jake the Alligator Man's 2009 Birthday Party! We wanted to say thanks again to Wendy Murry for all her hard work putting together the 2009 version of Jake's party! We hope to see some of you again next year for Jake's Fourth Annual 75th Birthday.

We also wanted to say thank you to the Mermaid Inn. It was our first stay at the motel and we could not have been happier. Clean, quiet, and an incredibly friendly owner. Next time you're in Long Beach and need a place to stay check out the Mermaid Inn at the north end of Long Beach.

The artist who created the amazing Jake stunt double also created one of the best hot rod show awards we've seen. Congratulations again to Mike for winning the award with his Desoto-powered 1942 Ford pickup.

Each year they hold a contest to crown the annual Bride of Jake. Here's a shot of the newest Mrs. Jake. They look like they'll be very happy together:-)

Jake the Alligator Man Birthday Party t-shirt update

Howdy all,

We hope you're all having a great Summer so far. We've been working the past couple of weeks on new t-shirts and thought you might enjoy getting a look at the shirt we designed for Jake the Alligator Man's upcoming "Third Annual 75th Birthday Party". The shirt features the always stylish Jake in a monster movie/vintage sideshow themed-design. The shirt will be available at Jake's party in Long Beach, Washington on August 8th.

We'll have further details about the party next week along with a sneak peek at the first of three new tiki designs we're debuting at Tiki Oasis 2009 down in San Diego.

Happy Friday,

Vintage Roadside designs a T-shirt for Jake the Alligator Man!

We're huge fans of roadside attractions here at Vintage Roadside. One of our favorite stops is Marsh's Free Museum in Long Beach, Washington which houses a large collection of vintage arcade games, taxidermy, nautical items, and the star of the show - Jake the Alligator Man.

On August 8th, 2009 Jake fans from far and wide will be in Long Beach for Jake's "Third Annual 75th Birthday Party". The party will feature, among other activities, a hot rod show, live music, birthday cake, burlesque performances, and a drive in screening of The Creature From the Black Lagoon. For those looking to bring home a piece of Jake there will be a limited edition Birthday Party T-shirt. That's where we come in. Below is the first look at the front of the t-shirt we've designed for the party.

We'll have more party information in the coming weeks. You can also find additional images of the t-shirt design on our Facebook page here.

Hope everyone has a great weekend,

Vintage Roadside Visits: The Sou'Wester

Last week we were up on Washington's Long Beach Peninsula, in town as part of the planning for Jake the Alligator Man's Birthday Party on August 8th, 2009. (We'll have much more on this later, but in the meantime, think carnival sideshow married to rockabilly with a splash of burlesque...)

After the meeting, we had some time to explore before heading home and followed up on a couple of recommendations that we check out the Sou'Wester Lodge. Variously described as funky, eccentric, odd, and wonderful, we were hooked at the mention that there were vintage travel trailers on the property.

Thinking that we would do a quick swing by the property, we drove down to Seaview, knocked on the door of the Lodge, and ended up staying almost three hours visiting with the owner, Len Atkins - hands down one of the most interesting people we've ever met. Unfortunately, his wife Miriam was under the weather, but we look forward to meeting her next time.

Located on three acres with only trees and dunes between it and the ocean, the Lodge itself was once the summer home of Portland, Oregon businessman and politician Henry Corbett. Weathered by 117 years of coast rain and wind, the Sou'Wester remains impressive in its scale and interior woodwork. Within the Lodge, there are a number of small suites for rent on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Our favorite was probably the Picasso suite, decorated with art prints and postcard reproductions of Picasso's work and having a feeling of the artist's garret.

Art note: in the Lodge's main room, you'll find original art by Bill Cumming, founder of the Northwest School art movement, and Catherine Murphy, noted contempory realist painter. Both artists have spent time at the Sou'Wester and are counted among Len and Miriam's friends.

After a tour of the Lodge, Len was kind enough to show us around the grounds...and one of the most impressive collections of vintage travel trailers we've come across. Although the collection started almost by accident, Len has amassed Spartans, Airstreams, and the Pacemaker, the first trailer we've ever seen with an upstairs AND a downstairs. Although not easy to keep a travel trailer watertight and mildew-free at the coast, the trailers were well-loved but tidy and decorated with the same funky eye to art as the main Lodge. The price of a night in one of the trailers ranges from around $88 - $140 depending on the particular trailer and season.

Jumping back to the story of Len and Miriam, we learned some interesting facts during the course of our conversation with Len: they are originally from South Africa, spent a number of years in the 1950s teaching on a kibbutz in Israel, moved to Chicago in the late 1960s, and, tiring of city life after 15 years, set off on a quest for tranquility in a travel trailer of their own. Landing in Seaview, WA, Len and Miriam realized they were home and bought the Sou'Wester in 1981, two days after seeing the property for the first time. Nothing like a little adventure to keep one young!

If you happen to be near Seaview on Saturday, February 14th, the Sou'Wester is hosting a talk by noted naturalist and author Jim Stapleton, an event that fits right in with Len and Miriam's decades long tradition of gathering people together to share ideas, music, and art.

With its funky decor, very basic amenities, and rough-around-the-edges appearance, a night at the Sou'Wester might not be for everyone (something Len was careful to make clear). What we can say is that there is definitely something about the place and the proprietor that rings true - an authentic roadside stop run by authentic people on a quest for life experiences beyond the 9-to-5. We're looking forward to returning!
